Friends of the Smokies is excited to announce the annual Classic Hike Series, offering monthly guided hikes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Classic Hikes of the Smokies series, starting its eighth year, offers a way to hike trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, learn about the history and ecology of the park, and to meet other hikers.

Classic Hikes are held the second Tuesday of the month, from March through December.

The Friends of the Lake 5K Road Race, Walk & Kids Fun Run is a charitable event to support the recreation opportunities of Lake Junaluska through the Friends of the Lake program.

All profits from this event go to the annual maintenance and improvement of the recreation areas at Lake Junaluska which annually costs over $250,000.

Gifts to the Friends of the Lake help Lake Junaluska continue to be a beloved place where the community can enjoy the walking trail, gardens and breathtaking vistas.

The annual Burnsville Metric kicks off the riding season in the idyllic Yancey County countryside. Cruise through the Toe River Valley on a 60.7-mile ride. The ride begins and ends on Burnsville Town Square, passing through the communities of Huntdale, Red Hill, Loafers Glory and Bakersville along the way. For less-experienced riders, a 43-mile loop provides a shorter option.

After the ride, Homeplace Beer Co. will host a celebration for riders, family and friends with craft beer and a food truck.

Early registration is available online. Day-of registration and packet pickup take place 7:15 a.m.-8:45 a.m. Ride begins promptly at 9 a.m.
