Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon, Half Marathon and Anthem Star 10K- CANCELED @ Elmwood Park

This event is canceled due to current health concerns regarding the coronavirus.

Marathon Series has earned its title as “America’s Toughest Road Marathon” by challenging runners with over 7,430 ft. in elevation change, more than any other road marathon in the U.S. This race runs along the famously scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, and proceeds from this non-profit event benefit the parkway and local charities. The full, half and 10k all prove equally challenging yet rewarding on this mountainous course, and all runners are rewarded with a unique medal, a tech-tee, live music and local craft beer at the festival-like finish in downtown Roanoke. This race would not be possible without the support of our title sponsor, Foot Levelers.

This event is owned and operated by the Roanoke Outside Foundation whose mission to make outdoor activity and environmental stewardship a core component of our community’s lifestyle by promoting a “conservation through recreation” philosophy.

Contact the event organizer for further information on their response to COVID-19 and any cancellations or schedule changes.

21st Blue Ridge Kite Festival- CANCELED @ Roanoke County's Green Hill Park

This event has been canceled due to health concerns regarding the coronavirus.

The 21st annual Kite Festival held in Green Hill Park is a favorite springtime day of outdoor family fun! This event offers free admission, free parking, free children’s t-shirts, and free kites to the first 1,000 children attending with an adult. Awesome colors and shapes paint the skies as kites take flight. The result is a breath-taking sight that shouldn’t be missed. For many years, the Blue Ridge Kite Festival was quoted as being “The Richmond Air Force Kite Club’s favorite and a model of planning, efficiency, and hospitality.” The Richmond Air Force Kite Club provides an entire day of quality entertainment! On average, over 9,000 spectators come to this annual family festival. Each year folks return to explore and participate in kiting activities, take a brief kite flying lesson or just relax and watch the show. Don’t forget to bring your own kite or get there early and pick up a free one so you can join in all the fun!
Food and craft vendors are also on site for everyone’s enjoyment. Numerous local sponsors bring support and enthusiasm to this much anticipated event. Plan on being intrigued and delighted as you watch championship flyers, quad line kites, participate in kid’s contests and custom-kite exhibits, have a caricature done by a local caricature artist and explore the arts and crafts vendors and much more. You will be mesmerized and revitalized at the end of this spectacular day!
The Blue Ridge Kite Festival is presented by Roanoke County Parks, Recreation & Tourism.

Blue Ridge Slow-K: America's Slowest 5K- CANCELED @ River’s Edge South Sports Complex

This event has been canceled due to health concerns regarding the coronavirus.

The new Blue Ridge “Slow-K,” will give runners one more opportunity to run with America’s Toughest community in an event that’s designed to help celebrate everyone’s accomplishments and get some well-deserved recovery. We’ve dubbed the Blue Ridge Slow-K, America’s Slowest 5K and after running on the Blue Ridge course you’ll understand why.

This fun run will be un-timed and have a leisurely start of 9 a.m. The idea is to create a format where everyone isn’t looking at their watches, but slowing down and connecting with other runners and race organizers. In lieu of the standard race shirt, every runner will receive a Slow-K coffee mug, free coffee, and well-earned donuts at the finish line. The 5K course along the Roanoke River Greenway will also include a few other surprises to keep participants from overexerting after running mountains the day before.

Participants from any Blue Ridge distance, spectators, family and friends and the general public are invited to participate. We plan to have mimosas, biscuits and other brunch items available for purchase.

If climbing up a cliff isn’t for you… perhaps rappelling down a cliff is!  Rappelling is a fun and exhilarating wilderness adventure, tame enough for families new to the outdoors, and exciting enough to never be forgotten.

An intro rappelling day can be customized for anyone, from those with no experience to those seeking larger thrills or even those preparing for canyoneering objectives. During our rappel clinic, we will teach you how to set yourself up on rappel, proper body positioning, and proper rappelling techniques. You will get to rappel 40 – 120 foot cliffs, high above the Linville Gorge. If you’re feeling a little nervous, don’t be, our professional guides will coach you through the toughest moments with easy to follow instruction as well as a controlled safety line, ensuring a slow and smooth descent.

For more advanced rappellers, we also offer specific programs for climbing-oriented rappelling education, from setting up rappelling anchors to rescuing yourself when you rope is to short or damaged.

Our Intro Rock Climbing days are a great way to spend time with your family, significant other, or to just go on a new adventure. Designed for anyone who wants to experience rock climbing outdoors, a climbing day will grow your mental and physical strengths. The best part is always  climbing to the summit, which will give you a feeling of accomplishment accompanied by breathtaking views that truly puts you in the moment.

A typical climbing day starts with an introduction to your guide followed by a brief hike through the Linville Gorge Wilderness area to beautiful granite walls ranging from 40 to 120 ft tall. Once the ropes are hung you will get to take turns climbing the wall, learning climbing specific body movements, lingo, and safety techniques. We will take a short break for lunch and snacks before going back at it.
